This is a pretty exciting project if you are at all interested in the history of Lake Minnetonka. The lake was once a tourist destination with grand hotels, all those hotels eventually went away many by fire.
Here is a proposed development to take the site of the former Pizza Hut location in downtown Excelsior and put up a $12 million dollar hotel reminiscent of the Grand Hotel days.
The planning commission gave a unanimous approval and now it goes before the City Council July 16th.
The independent boutique Excelsior Hotel would have 58 guest rooms, about 850 square feet of retail space, and a 120-seat “chef-oriented” restaurant that would serve the general public and guests. There would also be a 120-seat ballroom on the third level with an outdoor patio seating area.
The project is being proposed by Thomas F. James Properties based in Excelsior, led by Thomas James. The architects are from Weber Architects & Planners in Long Lake. It does not appear that there is a General Contractor or Hotel Operator selected yet.
Judging by the renderings courtesy of Mpls/St Paul Business Journal, this looks like a great project and great addition to Excelsior and Lake Minnetonka. Good luck Gents!
