Frank Gehry guest house, moving the Lake Minnetonka guest house to Owatonna

I am a fan of good architecture and design.  It is not often that us Minnesotans can boast such famed designers, and when we do we have had a history of destroying them.  I know of at least 1 Frank Lloyd Wright home that was bulldozed on Lake Minnetonka.

Frank Gehry had designed the Winton Guest House overlooking Lake Minnetonka in 1987.  It sat back off the road and was hard to see unless you were looking for it.  Thankfully this piece of “art” is not being bulldozed but being relocated to Owatonna.

Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal has a great article on the challenges of moving this structure including an 80 ton Stone Bedroom.

They also have a great slide show of pictures from moving the Winton Guest House.

Twin Cities Mansions: Once there were Castles" event

There is a free event to promote a new book titled Once there were Castles” about the Lost Mansions of the Twin Cities.  This will be held at the James J Hill Mansion on Summit Ave in St Paul Tuesday September 27th and 7PM.

I love the architecture of these old mansions and the history that goes with them.  This event could be interesting.  The author of the book also wrote The Lost Twin Cities.

At one time, at least five hundred mansions graced the Twin Cities area; now all but a few have virtually disappeared.

Join author Larry Millett on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. for a discussion based on his new book “Once There Were Castles,” set to release in September 2011. A brief reception, book signing, and optional tour of the James J. Hill House will be offered following the discussion.

The first book to take an in-depth look at the history of lost mansions and estates in the Twin Cities, “Once There Were Castles” presents ninety luxurious homes that have vanished, including the lavish Charles Gates mansion in Minneapolis which survived only nineteen years. Organized by neighborhood and richly illustrated, the book is an absorbing read for Twin Cities residents, architecture enthusiasts and history buffs.
